DIY Recycled Jewelry Stand

Share |

Are you a greenie who loves fashion accessories? Have no idea how to store them? Want to create a jewelry display and storage stand out of something recycled? Years ago I spotted this gun rack at a yard sale. I think I paid around $3 for it. I took it home, lightly sanded it (it was stained), added a cross bar for necklaces, painted it and added cup hooks for additional bracelets and this is what I came up with...

DIY Jewelry Stand
It was so easy to create! You can use the space above the ammunition drawer to display small photos or sentimental trinkets or add a ring holder, or small dishes with other jewelry pieces. I replaced the original knobs with these brushed silver ones I found at the Home Depot. They were inexpensive and very easy to switch out.

Bracelet Storage Idea

Necklace Storage Idea

Bracelet Storage DIY
To store the bracelets I bought cup hooks at the drugstore and screwed them into the wood.

Cup Hooks
First, measure and mark where the hooks will be inserted with a ruler so their placement is even. I then used a very fine drill bit to drill into the marks so that the cup hooks didn't crack the wood when I twisted them in. Ideally you want to use a drill bit a bit thinner than the screw itself for a tight fit.

Cross Bar
Then I added this 1" wooden dowel to hang my necklaces from. First I cut it to the exact dimension of the interior space of the gun rack. Then I measured and glued it in place. You can use wood glue to do this.

Once the glue was set I drilled a small hole directly into the center of the dowel from the outside and drove a small nail into the hole. This helped to give more support to the cross beam than just the glue alone.

Important to note: If you're going to hang the stand on your wall when you're done do not place the crossbar all the way to the back of the piece as shown in this photo. You'll need to move your cross bar further forward so that you'll have room to slip the necklace around the bar to open and close it.

The jewelry stand loaded with necklaces.

I love this part! Using the gun rests (empty on the left, filled on the right) to hang additional bracelets, long or large jewelry pieces from. The beaded strands on the right don't have clasps so there isn't any way for me to hang them from the cross bar. But they nestle together nicely with some other beaded pieces, a bracelet and a small jewelry bag that holds an an additional delicate necklace in it.

And the bullet drawer on the bottom can be used as additional storage space!

I put some lariat necklaces, ribbon flowers and wrist wear in mine.

The final decision to make... Hang on the wall or place on my dresser top? Gun racks were designed to hang on the wall so they will always come with rings like this for that purpose. I opted to keep mine on my dresser so that it's within easier reach.

If you make your own gun rack jewelry stand send me a picture and I'll add it to this page :) And let me know if you have any questions about this project. I'll be happy to answer them for you.

I just inherited my Grandfather's gunrack and was trying to figure what to do with it!!! It is very similar to yours but has a back on it. Going to talk to my daughter tonight about creating a jewlery rack for her...so excited! Just trying to figure out how to add an earring area, since that is what she has the most of. If we ever get it done, I will send a picture! Thanks for the inpiration!

This looks awesome. I have no idea where I'd get a gun rack, though. Do they give them away at shooting ranges? Do you think you'd be able to add an earring frame behind the necklaces?

Hi Viktorija,

You would probably need to purchase a gun rack either new (expensive) or used (that's what I did). I'd say to look at thrift stores, yard sales, Craigslist, etc for a second hand rack. You could add a backing to the open area to create an area to store earrings. That's the neat thing about this idea, you can customize it to suit your needs.
