Confused about selecting your Wedding DJ or Live Band or the vocabulary that defines them? Hopefully this Wedding DJ FAQ list will help:

What is a Mobile DJ?
A Disc Jockey who travels to your event, bring and set up their own equipment (sound system) and play music during your event. Quite often a Mobile DJ will also act as an Master of Ceremonies (aka MC or Emcee) providing introductions and announcements throughout your event. Some also provide sound support for your ceremony for an additional fee.

What is an "Owner Operator" DJ Company?
Owner Operated means the company is run by a single person who on their own, or sometimes with the help of an assistant, personally provides all services before and on the day of your wedding. Very often being a DJ is their full time career. This usually means they are the person who answers the phone when you call, meet with you for your initial consult and are the DJ who will be there for you on location to play music and provide any other agreed upon services like being your MC on your wedding day or at your special event. Currently all of The Flirty Guide DJs are Owner Operated companies.

What are Multi-ops?
Larger companies that represent a wide variety of DJs, musicians, singers and entertainers or all types including caricature artists, balloon artists, circus performers and more. The best Multi-ops look for talented individuals and train their employees to adhere to their set standards of professionalism.

What are My Options for Live Entertainment?

Live music includes a wide range of performers from a single harpist to a string quartet, a jazz trio (quartet, quintet or sextet), vocalists of all styles and live bands. Very often can see and hear them perform at public events when considering whether or not they will be the right sound for your wedding or special event.

What is the DIfference Between an MC and DJ?
Simply being a DJ and owning a microphone does not make someone a qualified MC any more than "owning" a frying pan makes someone a chef. There are many technical skills involved with being a good MC that include understanding the structural elements of different types of announcements and introductions, good language and speaking skills, correct posture and body movement, microphone skills and basic etiquette. Understanding and mastering all of these elements is what separates the true professionals MCs from the DJs who feel what they offer their clients is "good enough."

Who Not to Hire:
Sadly there are both Owner Operated and Multi-ops companies that don't adhere to good business practices or in some cases any standards at all. They treat each event as a one time job often giving clients a minimum effort often for a minimum price. The sad thing is that the less reputable companies have for many years, successfully tarnished the image of the entire Wedding DJ industry as a whole, including the DJs who do try hard and care about their clients.

Why Should I Hire a DJ?
Being a Professional Mobile DJ requires more skill than just playing music.

  • As your Master of Ceremonies they help to keep the reception timeline running smoothly. They make certain that before key moments are announced and put into motion, the people they are introducing are present and that your photographer and videographer are present to document moments like the introduction of your wedding party, the first dance, toasts and cake cutting.
  • A DJ "reads" the crowd and understand what kind of music to play to create the atmosphere needed at any given point. With their expertise they can calm a crowd or bring everyone out of their chairs and to the dance floor. Great parties just don't happen, they are created.
  • A Professional DJ will have good sound equipment and will understand how their equipment works. I once attended a wedding where the sound system was so inferior I couldn't understand a single word the MC said all evening and the music sounded garbled as well. A good DJ will make recommendations, based on the size of the room and numerous other elements that determine what equipment will be needed to create a successful sound system for your event.
My hope is that the Wedding DJs you find here on The Flirty Guide will help brides and grooms to realize that not only can they raise their expectations when it comes to the services their DJ will provide, but that they should raise their expectations and that they don't have to settle for mediocre or worse (that stereotypical, microphone happy, inappropriately dressed, cheesy DJ with the fake voice, who uses inappropriate humor and no manners when it comes to how they interact with your guests).
